“He’s a really smart kid. He can tell you anything he hears, but he can’t read or write. He mixes up every single letter,” Halkiadakis said. The guarantee requires all Ohio third-grade students to reach a minimum ELA testing score in order to be promoted to fourth grade. However, beginning the 2019-2020 school year, the state put a pause on the promotion mandate in the wake of the pandemic, which is how students like Javier progressed to higher grade levels.
In addition to repetition, she’s found other ways to help the students who struggle with reading comprehension succeed, including work in small groups, hands-on learning activities and strategic breaks to give students time to recharge, as they reacquaint themselves to five days in the classroom. He finds the biggest barrier to be many students’ lack of a multiplication foundation, a skill they would typically begin learning in third grade, when this year’s class was receiving at-home instruction.
So far this year, he’s used multiplication flashcards, developed new educational games and came up with ways they can practice on their own, through assignments they complete at home.
