First-look review of new San Antonio concert venue Tech Port Center Arena with Smashing Pumpkins opening
The absolute sweet spot, the “best seat in the house,” according to an usher, is about five rows up the center section of bleachers. .
There are bars and bathrooms conveniently located on each side of the room, with what appeared to be twice as much real estate devoted to women’s bathrooms as men’s. If you don’t want to walk that far to a bar, vendors are hawking tall boys from tubs ballgame style. The bars also sell snacks like nachos and pretzel bites, but if you’re really hungry, show up early and start your night in the food hall next door. It’s not just good food for a concert venue, it’s good food for a food hall, featuring San Antonio favorites such as Earl Abel’s — yes, there’s pie — and The Big Bib BBQ.
Prices can be high but anyone who’s been to a Spurs game or movie recently knows those are standard arena prices. Cheaper options are available: A jumbo slice of pepperoni pizza from Capo’s and a bottle of water can be had for about $13. If you opt for the adult juice pouch full of vodka-spiked cherry lemonade, that’s on you.
Video screens and audio in the food hall ensured they knew what was happening onstage.
