VC Ian Chiu's passion for education began when he shared his secrets to getting scholarships in a book. Now he helps edtech startups make a difference as a top investor at Owl Ventures.

At 18, Ian Chiu started writing a book with his brothers on how to land college scholarships.One key to his success is seeing edtech early on as a"sector focus," he said.about the moment he first realized he could help others through education, he will immediately have an answer.

They spent over a year putting together a guide book titled"Caution, Watch for Scholarships Ahead," based on their own experience finding scholarships – many of which were listed online during the early days of the internet – and. After the book was published in 1998, it was endorsed by Stanford and the Houston Independent School District, where the three brothers had gone to high school.

"I think the experience planted a lot of different seeds of interest in what I ultimately ended up doing with my life," he said.
