Canine Companions recognized some of its special dogs during National Service Dog Month

It was only after Paralympian rugby player Daniel Guillou retired in 2008 that he got his first service dog, Cinnamon. And he never expected she would be so life-changing — or even one day life-saving.

At the Canine Companions training facility in Oceanside, Mara, a dog in the early phases of her training, lies next her trainer, Morgan Gallic. The nonprofit provides service dogs to adults, children and veterans with more than 65 different types of disabilities and facility dogs to professionals working in health care, criminal justice and educational settings at no cost to clients.

“It’s important to us that our service dog teams can get around public places safely and confidently, so in honor of National Service Dog month, we are asking people to raise a paw to protect the rights of service dogs and their handlers,” said Marcell Mallette, the nonprofit’s executive director for the southwest region.

Following an event celebrating National Service Dog Month, Daniel Guillou secures Vanetter in his kennel for the trip home.
