Southern states have the lowest income threshold with six of the 10 states with the lowest income thresholds for the 1% are in the Southeast. Alabama is among those six states.

Washington D.C.’s top 1% earn more than $1 million and if the nation’s capital were a state, it would replace Connecticut in the number one slot. Households in D.C. aren’t considered part of the 1% if they don’t earn at least $1,013,698. Southern states have the lowest income threshold with six of the 10 states with the lowest income thresholds for the 1% are in the Southeast. Alabama is among those six states, coming in at number 43 with an income of at least $470,341 needed to earn you a spot in the 1%.
