As the son of a coal miner growing up in a working-class Nottinghamshire town—but a free thinker all the way back to his schooldays—Lawrence bristled against societal norms. That mindset flowed freely throughan upper-class woman falls in love with a groundskeeper, and they have a torrid love affair. Yet it was far from mindless erotica.

In 1959, Grove Press decided to publish the book in the U.S. in its unedited entirety—a decision that made headlines across America, which still had strict obscenity laws at the time. Their copies were seized by the Post Office as the publisher shipped them out to stores. Grove Press sued, and the case was escalated to the Supreme Court. In, the Supreme Court ruled that it was not obscene and could be mailed, transitively ensuring that it could also be sold.
