It’s a really rich part. The layers that the show has pulled back over the seasons have been quite surprising. And again, there’s this harshness to the character, but something quite tragic about her as well. I’m glad you see that, because definitely I see it, and I hope it comes out. There’s just a really scared girl who does not know how to operate in the world, doesn’t know how to do it and has no real friends. She has to pay people like her manservant so he’ll be with her forever, as long as she has the money, but she has no real connection. She doesn’t know how to do it.
I remember, after the second season, I was nominated for a guest-star Emmy for that role, and at the party afterwards, my agent went up to [] and said, “What about making Jane a regular next season?” Nobody can tell the Palladinos what to do, so I’m sure that it was in their mind already, but they said, “Oh, good idea!” Anyway, I was offered a regular stint for that the next season.?
