Houston-based The Women's Home will get $20,000 in design services as the winner of...
The design package this year goes to The Women's Home — chosen from two dozen applicants — to help it design an new workforce development facility in the Spring Branch neighborhood.
"We are excited to work with The Women's Home for this year's Design for All Partnership. The organization does inspiring work supporting and enhancing the lives of women in Houston,” said Michael Hsu, FAIA, IIDA, principal. “This new facility will help expand their already-robust service offerings. Our team was impressed with the group's diligence in gathering feedback directly from the community they serve to guide and direct this latest endeavor.
The Women's Home, which supports women and families and focuses on emotional/mental, financial, physical, social, spiritual and vocational areas, recently acquired an acre of land in Spring Branch. Hsu's staff will analyze the site and create architectural renderings for a building that will provide childcare services and workforce development training for low-income families.
“Our staff, board and volunteers are unified in our goal to build stronger communities for women and their families,” said Anna Coffey, CEO of The Women’s Home. “We are constantly energized by the amazing women with whom we come in contact. The partnership with Michael Hsu Office of Architecture will allow us to focus on one pillar of our program: workforce readiness.”
Applicants for the Design for All award had to be 5013 nonprofits located within 50 miles of either Austin or Houston. For the 2022 award given to Austin Angels, the Hsu staff designed a community center to support children and families in foster care as part of a 1.5-acre former church facility in Buda, Texas.
