The annual Houston Pride Parade returns this month to mark its 45th year of celebration.

The LGBTQ rights movement in the United States is often traced back to the Stonewall Rebellion of 1969, a six-day riot in New York. Prior to this pivotal event, LGBTQ individuals faced discrimination, such as being denied service at bars, prohibited from touching each other while dancing, and even subjected to arrests based solely on their sexual orientation or gender identity., the first official Houston Pride Parade was held in Montrose on July 1, 1979, as documented by their records.

However, this wasn’t the first parade of the Houston LGBTQ community. In June 1976, the University of Houston Gay Activist Alliance organized its. Although there were no floats or bands, about 300 to 400 people marched down Main Street from The Exile parking block. Following the march, a"Gayfest" was held at the Liberty Bank in Montrose.

Throughout the years, Pride Houston has evolved into a massive celebration of LGBTQ rights, attracting thousands of people to downtown and City Hall.The 45th Annual Houston Pride Parade will take place on Saturday, June 24 from 7-11 p.m., starting at Houston City Hall. Thebegins at Smith and Lamar, then continues up Smith Street to Walker, where it will make a right turn and run along Walker to Milam.

The parade is free and open to all ages. Tickets are not required, except for the $100 Parade VIP tickets that include seats, an open bar and light snacks.
