Workers at a McDonald's in south Houston walked off the job this week after an air conditioning unit went down for several hours while the region was underWhen Gloria Machuca arrived at the McDonald's on Almeda-Genoa Road to start her shift in the restaurant's kitchen around 4 a.m. Tuesday, it was already hot, she said. Temperatures that day reached 99 degrees, with humidity making it feel even hotter, according to the National Weather Service.

In total, six employees left work in the kitchen due to the heat, Machuca said. Another four stayed, and the restaurant remained open. When Machuca told her shift manager she was leaving, the manager told her she was making the right decision. Porfirio Villarreal, a spokesperson for the Houston Health Department, agreed.

Houston law requires food establishments to have air conditioning during the summer and heat during the winter, he said. Without it, workers could suffer from heat exhaustion or heat stroke, which can be deadly. The time it takes for the symptoms of heat-related illness to manifest differs based on the person's age, weight and health conditions, as well as whether they're able to take breaks and drink ice water, Villarreal said.
