A Houston man who said he was supposed to smuggle 10 pounds of fentanyl hidden in the battery of his SUV to someone waiting at the Galleria was sentenced Thursday to federal prison, authorities said.
Juan Alvarado-Vargas, 22, pleaded guilty in April to conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute fentanyl, about six months after he was stopped at a South Texas checkpoint, federal authorities said. on Oct. 3 trying to drive though the Border Patrol checkpoint along U.S. Highway 59 near Freer, according to an arrest affidavit. A secondary inspection was taken after a K-9 and a computer-generated alert, according to court documents.Agents said they noticed tool markings and apparent tampering on the battery. Agents removed the top portion of the battery and found six bundles of fentanyl weighing 4.65 kilograms – or about 10.25 pounds.
When Alvarado-Vargas pleaded guilty, he said that smugglers had offered to pay him $4,500 to illegally transport drugs from Mexico. The drop off point was the Galleria in Houston. U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo sentenced the Houston man to six years in prison, federal authorities said.
