Tom Bailey leads Day 1 with a 6.03 as the HOT ROD Drag Week 2022 competition kicks off in St. Louis.
The opening day of eBay Motors Power HOT ROD Drag Week Presented by Gear Vendors Overdrive was fast-paced with five 6-second runs and a couple more on the cusp of the vaunted time zone. Tom Bailey leads the field with a smooth 6.03 at 249 mph, the second quickest run in the 17 year history of the drag-and-drive event.The four-time champion has little wiggle room with four more competition days and a list of racers capable of knocking him off the pedestal if he slips up.
The small-block LS powered Nova of Jason Sack ran a career best of 7.153 at 195 mph, placing him eighth on the list of quickest Day 1 runs and sixth in the Unlimited class. Clark Rosentengel is on top of Pro Street Power Adder thanks to his 7.55 at 196 mph effort, which is good for ninth overall. Rounding out of the top ten runs from Day 1 is Glenn Hunter and his insanely nice 1956 Bel-Air with a 7.56 at 183 mph performance.
Other class leaders include Matthew Sweet in Pro Street-Naturally Aspirated while the LS-powered 1987 Volvo wagon of Mikael Borggren is the provisional leader in Modified-Power Adder with a 7.62 at 180 mph. The Super Street category is split between Big-Block Power Adder and Small-Block Power Adder with Rick Trunkett leading the former with an 8.05 at 157 mph. Kyle Bemount is leading the charge in Super Street Small-Block Power Adder thanks to an 8.29 at 176 mph.
Wayne Baker turned in the only 8-second time slip for Gasser/A with an 8.92 at 151 mph while it took a 10.01 at 135 to lead Gasser/B. Tony McDonald is dominating Hot Rod with an 11.90 at 115 mph. And finally, Street Machine Eliminator, the largest category of the week, features 134 cars and Mike Rymarz ran 10.05 at 139 mph with his 2011 Mustang Shelby GT500. The top 32 finishers in this eliminator are put into a special shootout on Friday. Their final average is reduced by one-tenth and becomes a fixed dial-in for a bracket race. Right now, the cutoff is sitting at a 10.76 but that could radically change with four more days of racing left on the schedule.
