Ohio State offers Buckeye Nation a handful of teams to consider as the favorite, but it is hard to beat the love affair with 2002 national champions.

Buckeye Nation reached full-term 20 years ago, fathered by a vest-wearing motivational maestro and delivered by a team of success-starved players who coalesced into what may be the most belovedBefore 2002, Ohio State fans shared no organized identity beyond an alumni club and obsession with the scarlet and gray.

But my vote goes to the 2002 team. It was an undervalued roster full of character and characters who provided a thrill-a-minute carnival ride. Coach Jim Tressel arrived in 2001 and brought belief and bravado with his famous “310 days” speech, but the Buckeyes finished 7-4 that season and entered 2002 ranked No. 13 in the Associated Press preseason poll. There was little reason to suspect OSU would finish 14-0.

“Teams are works of art,” former OSU tight end Ben Hartsock texted. “That ’02 team was a masterpiece. Stars , Moxie , Glue Guys , Goofballs , all working in harmony. Nickey added, “What made it fun was knowing every player on the team was emptying the tank. Our belief in each other quickly became faith that we could beat anybody if we had each other’s back.”
