Major Hollywood studios plan to wait until writers on strike go broke before resuming negotiations with the Writers Guild of America in the fall.

Hollywood studios are planning to wait until writers in the Writers Guild Strike go broke before restarting negotiations with the Writers Guild of America in the fall. The writers strike has been ongoing since May 2, 2023, after the WGA failed to negotiate a fair contract with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers . Issues that are core to the strike include residual payments for streaming content and the use of AI programs in writing scripts.

Now, Deadline reports that Hollywood studios plan to wait out the Writers Guild Strike, biding their time until writers go broke before restarting negotiations in the fall. A producer close to the AMPTP informed Deadline that studios may wait until late October before starting negotiations again. The idea is for writers to demand the WGA begin more talks with the AMPTP due to more writers experiencing financial hardship.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT How The Writers Strike Has Impacted Hollywood So Far By its very nature as a strike, the WGA writers strike has affected many TV shows in various stages of development. Popular series whose production has been delayed by the strike include Stranger Things, Andor, Cobra Kai, The Last of Us, Yellowjackets, Daredevil: Born Again, and The Penguin.

While it makes sense tactically for the AMPTP to wait until writers are desperate for money before restarting negotiations, this plan will likely put a dent in studios' relationships with writers. If the WGA's demands are unable to be met because of this, it will likely result in tensions between writers and studios even after the strike has ended. It's also unclear if the possible SAG-AFTRA actor's strike will change studios' plans to wait out the WGA's strike.

If Hollywood studios aren't willing to negotiate with striking writers soon, then it seems movies and TV will be at a standstill for some months to come. This would be further disruptive if SAG-AFTRA were to strike as well. Hollywood studios are asking the federal government to mediate current negotiations in hopes of the actor's strike not happening, but the deadline for negotiations is still 11:59 p.m. PST today, July 12, 2023.
