Cord-cutting, an advertising fallout, higher interest rates and an unfavorable regulatory environment present obstacles — but these are the companies that could be involved in M&A in the new year.
This December, the general mood on Wall Street is that next year will not see an explosion of major transactions along the lines of the ones that created Warner Bros. Discovery , Paramount Global or Disney’s takeover of large parts of 21st Century Fox assets.
After all, companies like the David Zaslav-led WBD are still focused on making prior megadeals work, and others are waiting for what is perceived as a more favorable regulatory environment amid increased antitrust scrutiny. All entertainment companies are dealing with such challenges as accelerated cord-cutting and the advertising fallout of recession fears. Higher interest rates and decreased access to capital are also potential obstacles for M&A.
