Elections officials in an Arizona county voted Thursday to certify the results of the midterm elections following a court order, ending a gambit that had left the fate of tens of thousands of votes in the state uncertain
results of the midterm elections
Peggy Judd, a Republican board member who voted to certify, said she objected to being forced by a court but felt she had no choice. “I don’t like to be threatened,” she said. “What I do want is for people’s votes to be heard.” At a court hearing Thursday, Pima County Judge Casey McGinley said the board had extremely limited discretion to delay certification of the election results and couldn’t do so based on alleged concerns about voting machines. The judge, who was appointed by Republican Gov. Doug Ducey, ordered the board to meet and certify the results by 5 p.m. local time.
Ms. Hobbs and other top officials in the state are set to meet Monday to certify the election results statewide. She said in her lawsuit that if Cochise County didn’t certify the results by next Thursday, the state would move forward without including roughly 47,000 votes.
