McGovern Hall of the Americas at the Houston Museum of Natural Science has been closed for renovations. Now, it has finally reopened to the public with a brand new focus on Native Americans as a living people instead of a collection of artifacts.
It’s a potent reminder that indigenous history is not some mythic or ancient thing that happened long ago. For all that the original hall was a beautiful collection, it felt distinctly of the long-gone past, as its visitors were moving among ruins where only tools and were left to describe the people who made them.
All of this has been set against a neatly redecorated exhibition space. Gone are the deep black walls that framed the entire collection in shadow and often sent visitors through a dark maze. Now, the exhibit’s walls are a neutral gray that gives it a slightly modern, art-gallery feel. An incredible amount of technology has been added to the experience, including short films, animated cave paintings, and even a light-up 3D map of the aqueducts used in Tenochtitlan.
