After a rescue-filled weekend across Utah, officials say there was one simple thing hikers didn't have that could have helped them on the trails.
This past weekend there were three such missions in Washington County in which a Department of Public Safety helicopter was used in all the rescues."People think that it’s a good idea to go on a hike, but realize that they need water and then end up going 6 miles and didn’t even think to bring water with them, and then we have to go and get them," said Jacob Paul, backcountry deputy with the Washington County Sheriff's Office.
This weekend, heat-related illness was part of the reason behind one of the three rescue operations in Washington County. Last year, Gov. Spencer Cox helped with the ribbon cutting for the helicopter. Paul says it has changed how they now operate search and rescues in their region.
