The toll on the 21-mile North Bay commuter corridor is not expected to take effect until 2027 at the earliest.
Highway 37, the 21-mile commuter route linking Marin County to Vallejo, is now set to become the Bay Area’s newest toll road.
To address this, the agency plans to add a carpool lane in each direction, which MTC Executive Director Andrew Fremier said would work to relieve traffic experienced by tens of thousands of commuters and allow for transit service. The toll amount is proposed to be the same as that charged on the seven state-owned bridges in the Bay Area, which in 2027 would be at least $8. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission would ultimately decide what the toll amount would be. The tolls would be charged electronically using overhead toll gantries.
“You tax the poor and working people with no financial impacts on either wealthy employers or the communities that have refused to build adequate affordable housing,” Joe Feller told the commission during the hearing earlier this month. While project proponents touted the project as addressing equity issues, including addressing grueling traffic conditions and offering a low-income discount, some California Transportation Commissioners were concerned about the impacts.
Currently, the highway has no transit service because of the traffic conditions and bottlenecks. Fremier said conversations are ongoing about adding a potential transit service.
