Inquiries by the Post Tribune to a number of school districts show air conditioning in the classroom is no longer uncommon, but older systems need frequent repairs and classrooms in buildings that do not have a centralized system are forced to use window units. But individual units are inadequate in larger areas like gymnasiums and cafeterias.

According to a study by the Government Accountability Office authorized by Congress in 2019, about half of the U.S. public school districts — an estimated 54% — need to update or replace multiple building systems or features in their schools.

Hobart High School teacher Cathy Nelson gives instructions to her theater arts students, before they perform their scripts in the theater at the school, in Hobart on Friday, Sep. 1, 2023. . River Forest Community Schools Superintendent Kevin Trezak said the school board opted to spend its COVID-19 stimulus money along with money from a recent successful referendum to install air conditioning at Evans and Meister elementary schools.Congress awarded schools relief money through a program called the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund or ESSER. Three rounds of funding were made to each district.

In all, Trezak said it cost the small district of about 1,600 students nearly $6 million for the improvements at both schools. Amid last week’s heat wave, district manager Mike Raisor said some students were moved to areas with air conditioning as some of the district’s older schools aren’t completely air-conditioned.He said Beveridge Elementary, one of the district’s oldest schools, has individual air conditioning units in each classroom but not in common areas like the cafeteria. The district shifted from using ovens to prepare lunches to serving sandwiches and salads.

“In a perfect world we would be able to invest in new units. We have some schools that are a little older than others. If we had an opportunity and an abundance of resources, we would have an opportunity to invest in more air conditioning units that are more energy efficient and work more effectively,” George said.
