The 11-year-old was stabbed near Samuel E. Shull Middle School in Perth Amboy last week.
The students were protesting what the teachers’ union says is a failure by the administration to address unsafe conditions in city schools. Another peaceful protest was planned for later Monday outside city hall in Perth Amboy.after being stabbed at about 2:35 p.m Wednesday on Johnstone Street between Sutton and Ridgeley street by another 11-year-old, shortly after classes ended for the day at Samuel E. Shull Middle School, city officials said.
The stabbing followed a fight outside the school at dismissal and occurred near one of the boys’ homes a few blocks from the school, the president of the school district’s teacher’s union told NJ Advance Media. Perth Amboy Federation president Patricia Paradiso said ongoing concerns in the approximately 1,400 student Shull Middle School brought by teachers have been ignored by the district’s administration.
Paradiso said teachers are afraid to voice concerns out of fear of retaliation and that the school has too may vacant positions to be able to effectively educate of its students. The union president added the district administration avoids suspending students to avoid reporting the incidents to state education officials.
