Clark also scored on a fourth-and-5 on the ensuing possession after quarterback Nic Lee scrambled 14 yards across the goal line to tie the score as time expired in the first quarter. Hawkins connected with Alejandro Tavarez on a quick slant over the middle, and the senior receiver trotted into the end zone to put Johnson back in front 14-7.
On the proceeding kickoff, Tavarez weaved through the Clark special teams to return the ball 96 yards for a touchdown, giving the lead back to Johnson 21-14. The Cougars answered with an 8-yard touchdown pass from Lee to senior receiver Michael Vasquez to tie the score at 21 heading into halftime. Late in the fourth quarter, Lee threw a post to the shallow end zone, where Vasquez hauled in his second touchdown of the game to level the score once again at 28. Stone's field goal from the right hash in the waning seconds sealed the 31-28 win for Johnson.The win elevates Johnson above Clark in the District 28-6A standings, bouncing back from a double-digit loss to Brandeis a week ago.
