With the Wagner Thunderbirds trailing Frisco Liberty’s Red Hawks 46-35 with 5:35 minutes remaining, both retreated to their benches, and several people in the stands moved out of the way as hail made its way through the Alamodome and onto the court.Other sports reporters also took to social media to share their disbelief.
“I’d never thought I’d type this but, we just had a brief rain/hail delay here at the Wagner-Liberty UIL Class 5A girls basketball semifinal game at the Alamodome,” wrote Annie Rice, a visual journalist for Lubbock Online and the USA Today network,The city of San Antonio owns and operates the 1.2 million-square-foot Alamodome, which was built in the 1990s and functions as both a sports palace and a convention center.
Richard Oliver, a spokesman for the city’s convention and sports facilities, said that the fast-moving storm system over downtown San Antonio “produced strong wind gusts that drove small hail and rain sideways through the exhaust fan vents on the Alamodome roof.” The Alamodome’s sloped roof is held up by a massive concrete pylon and cable suspension support system. The roof will be evaluated for any hail damage Friday morning, Oliver said.
