A Hammond man is accused of kicking, beating and strangling his sister’s German shepherd dog, according to court records. The 20-year-old man is charged with animal cruelty, a Level 6 felony.
Around 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 10, a Hammond police officer was dispatched to the 1300 block of Stanton Avenue on a report of a man punching, kicking and dragging a German shepherd dog, according to the probable cause affidavit. The call indicated that the dog was injured and being dragged along 114th Street, records state.
A resident told police that he heard a dog yelping and crying and looked outside his window where he saw the man torturing the dog as it lay on the ground howling in pain, court records state, and he proceeded to call 911.
Later that afternoon, Hammond Animal Control requested police backup as they located the suspect and the injured dog in the 1300 block of Stanton Avenue, the affidavit states. A man opened the door matching the description of the person who abused the dog, court records state, and he told police that there was a German shepherd dog inside that belonged to his sister.
Cruz told police that he’s sick of his sister’s dog always getting out and that he has to take care of it, records state. Police spoke with Cruz’s mother, who told him over speakerphone that someone recorded him beating the dog again, according to court records. At that point, Cruz was handcuffed and taken to Hammond City Jail, the affidavit states, and Hammond Animal Control waited to take the animal into their possession.
