Sarokin served on both federal district courts and appeals courts. In retirement in San Diego, he wrote a dozen thought-provoking plays that were presented at the North Coast Repertory Theater.

Former federal Judge H. Lee Sarokin, who died Tuesday in La Jolla at age 94, lived a life of astonishing range.

Sarokin made a ruling in 1985 that freed Rubin “Hurricane” Carter, who was falsely convicted of committing three murders and imprisoned for nearly two decades. Carter’s story became part of pop culture lore, the subject of a ferocious protest song by Bob Dylan and a film, where Sarokin was played by the actor Rod Steiger.

“It always seemed he was giddy with the joy of what he was doing,” said David Ellenstein, the artistic director of North Coast Repertory. He first connected with Sarokin about a dozen years ago, through the president of the theater’s board of trustees. The former judge mentioned that he had was writing plays; that led to readings for a live audience as part of the theater’s New Works series.

“They loved it,” Ellenstein said of audience members. “Sometimes the discussion could get heated over a particular issue. But people walked out glad that they had been stimulated and entertained.” After Cipollone’s lawyers had presented their case, lawyers for the companies asked Sarokin to dismiss and issue a “directed verdict,” or a ruling declaring them the winner. He did not, and in a blistering decision said the evidence showed a conspiracy by the tobacco industry that — in a memorable phrase — was “vast in its scope, devious in its purpose and devastating in its results.”
