“Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant” exposes a Hollywood blind spot, writes Drew Magary.

Christopher Raphael / Metro Gold

“Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant,” which opens Friday, is a forgettable motion picture. It should have been right in my sweet spot, given that it was made by one of my favorite directors, and stars one of my favorite actors in Jake Gyllenhaal . Also, as a 46-year-old father of three, I am very much a War Movie Guy. But I didn’t find much, if anything, new that this movie had to say about war and man’s lust for it.

Because why should I ever count on Hollywood to make a great movie about Afghanistan when it never has? Hell, the miracle of “The Covenant” is that Hollywood decided to make a big release about the War in Afghanistan to begin with. As you might have guessed, they don’t bother to dive too deeply into a war that lasted 20 years, cost more than $2 trillion, claimed the lives of more U.S. citizens than the 9/11 attack that precipitated it, andHead over to Iraq — a war that was enacted under false pretenses, ended over 4,000 more U.S.

Dar Salim as Ahmed, Jason Wong as Joshua"JJ" Jung, Jake Gyllenhaal as Sgt. John Kinley, Christian Ochoa as Eduardo"Chow Chow" Lopez, and Rhys Yates as Tom"Tom Cat" Hancock in"Guy Ritchie's The Covenant."Think about that void for a moment. Think about the depth and breadth of stories you’ve heard about these two wars in books, in longform articles, perhaps in stories that veterans have told you directly.
