Took over post during COVID time, then had a bigger battle to fight

Megan Long had been thinking on and off for a decade about some of the things she could do if she became an athletic director. So when Frank Foggiano, who had been the athletic director at Grossmont High for almost three decades, announced he was stepping down in June of 2020, Long tossed her name in the ring along with several others. At the start of the 2020-2021 school year, however, the COVID-19 pandemic had cancelled all sports. And on-campus learning was only slowly being reintroduced.

“It was very challenging, but the doctors and nurses gave me a lot of support. They kind of made it as pleasant as it could be. “I was confident in the doctor’s plan to treat the cancer and never gave up hope,” said Long. “It was stage 3 and they moved fast. From diagnosis to surgery was just five weeks. Because the cancer had moved to my lymph nodes, they had to try to kill all the cancer cells before they started cruising around to other parts of the body.

After a stint as an assistant coach at a junior high in South Carolina for a year, she returned to Grossmont High to teach social science and geography as a leadership elective.
