Griffith Public Schools are clearing up an apparent miscommunication over the busing of students from the Area Career Center (ACC) in Hammond following a situation Wednesday in which several students were left waiting for a ride home.

The issue has exploded in a thread on the Griffith G-Town Uncensored Facebook page, including a number of profane comments, with others highly critical of the school district and some comments even suggesting violence toward an individual. At issue is the fact that the Griffith students, who are bused daily to the ACC, returned from a field trip in Chicago but there was no bus to take them home. The bus had already done its normal afternoon pickup of students from the ACC.

Dumezich said the school district cannot afford to bus students home from after-hours events. Still, she felt bad about the situation and reasoned that the ACC’s field trip permission slip could be more clearly stated. “We have reached out to the ACC so that they make this clearer to avoid any confusion in the future,” she said. “We will try our best to send reminders to students and parents in the future as well.”Dumezich was aghast at the comments on the Griffith Facebook page, many of which she believed were inaccurate or out of the scope of the issue. As one person wrote on the page, “Some of these comments border on character assassination.

Dumezich urged calm and for adults to set an example in their social media behaviors. She had posted some comments herself in order to diffuse and explain the situation, while others responded with profanity. “I think that we need to do better all of us as adults modeling the type of behavior we would like to see in our children,” she said. “I think people need to consider that these people have families, and we want to work with our families in a way that’s respectful. We are not perfect, and we will make errors and parents make errors. I think we should all treat one another as we would wish to be treated.
