Jürgen Krauss, a contestant from the 2021 season of the 'Great British Bake Off' is coming all the way from the United Kingdom to make desserts and play music for The Newberry Consort’s Gala Reception, “Kuchen und Posaunen” (cake and trombone), on May 14 at the Women’s Club of Evanston.

“I love ‘Great British Bake Off’ and I watched a ton of it over the pandemic,” Malamut related. “I was of course a big fan because he is both a sackbut player and a baker.”She began following Krauss on Instagram and — at the urging of members of the gala committee — asked him if he would come to the benefit to prepare dessert and play sackbut.Krauss immediately said yes. “I’m crazy to some extent,” he joked.
It wasn’t until Krauss moved to England, though, that he began focusing on baking. “I missed German bread,” he explained. At press time, Krauss hadn’t decided what dessert he will make at the benefit but he’s not intimidated by preparing something delicious for a large crowd. He created desserts for a wedding attended by 180 people. He will bring one of his elegant cakes to be auctioned off at the event as well.The Gala is 6-9 p.m. May 14 at 1702 Chicago Ave. in Evanston. Tickets are $200. It is preceded by two performances of “Singen und Sagen: Music for Hope in a Time of War” at 8 p.m. May 13 at St.
“This music was published only a year after the beginning of the 30 Years’ War, which devastated Europe in a myriad of different ways,” Malamut noted. “Yet this music survived for hundreds of years, which is such an expression of hope.”More than 30 singers and instrumentalists will be featured. That includes 12 singers, five trumpets, four strings, four trombones, three dulcians, two cornets, timpani, violone, bass violin, and two organs.
