Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine was on Cleveland's west side Thursday, speaking at Lakewood High School.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Gov. Mike DeWine on Thursday announced that $68 million will be dispersed among 945 Ohio K-12 schools to improve their security structures.

DeWine made the announcement during a press conference at Lakewood High School, one of the grant recipients. “Security is a very important thing, but it takes time and commitment,” DeWine said during his remarks, which he followed with a tour and meeting with students. The announcement marks the fourth round of Ohio’s K-12 School Safety Grant Program. An initial allotment, funded by Ohio’s operating budget and the American Rescue Plan Act, provided $105 million for schools to improve safety. Last month DeWine signed a bill allocating an additional $112 million for such measures. That money covers the grants announced on Thursday, along with a final round of grants, which will be determined later.

In a budget proposal presented to the Ohio General Assembly this week, DeWine requested funds to help schools staff security resource officers, he said.found that among Republicans statewide, arming school resource officers is the best way to prevent mass shootings. Democrats favored measures like enacting red-flag laws and banning the sale of semi-automatic weapons.allowing teachers to arm themselves in schools with minimal training.
