Before Goodwill Industries closes its Newport, Perry County store on Dec. 23, it would be well advised to reread its mission statement.
Goodwill’s mission statement doesn’t say “except in rural areas where the facilities aren’t quite up to standard, and the store doesn’t quite meet the non-profit organization’s evolving economic goals.” Formerly a J.J. Newberry store, Goodwill’s presence all these years as an anchor to the square in Newport should not be discounted, either. Here is another case of Main Street America struggling to survive and remain relevant even as it keeps getting bashed by forces beyond its control. Corporate America hasn’t been kind to small rural towns, with Newport – along with Duncannon – losing its long-established PNC bank branches in recent years.
