Businesses are running out of supplies and pilot cars are guiding travelers through deep flood waters that have inundated the community of Glennallen.
GLENNALLEN, Alaska - Roads and parking lots turned into rivers and lakes, the sewage system was compromised, and businesses and schools closed.as rapidly melting snow continued to bring significant flooding to the town, bringing normal life to a halt.
Rachel Hendershott, a 12-year resident of Glennallen, shared her experience of how the flooding has dramatically interrupted routine, small-town life in the town. She said it was the worst she has ever seen it in her time. “Friday afternoon, it started to pick up pretty good. But I’d have to say between Saturday and today, it’s been fairly bad,” Hendershott said. “I’ve been told the IGA parking lot has about 20-ish inches of water ... The grocery stores have been closed for three days because nobody can get in there are out there. I know there’s other businesses and stuff that are having a hard time because they’re running out of supplies and can’t go get it.
“I think for the most part a lot of people are good and everybody’s just pitching in and just hoping and waiting and trying to buy time,” Hendershott said. “I do know yesterday, I some kids in the IGA parking lot with their little canoes, playing around in the water and I thought it was funny because I was joking about pulling out my little rubber raft and at least going rafting.
“I mean there’s nothing you can do about it except for, you know, try to find some humor and some fun in it I suppose.”
