A giant aquarium in a Berlin hotel burst early Friday – causing nearly 264,000 gallons of water and more than a thousand tropical fish to pour through the lobby and into the street, authorities said.
Photos of the building's exterior show significant debris.
“There are shards everywhere. The furniture, everything has been flooded with water," Sandra Weeser, a German lawmaker who was staying in the hotel, told the Associated Press."It looks a bit like a war zone.” The AquaDom sits in the same building as Sea Life Berlin. Sea Life, which does not own or participate in the maintenance of the AquaDom, said its Berlin aquarium would be closed"until further notice."
"The entire Sea Life Berlin team is dismayed by the incident in the AquaDom, which is not far from our aquarium," Marcel Kloos, regional manager at Merlin Entertainments, which owns Sea Life Berlin, said in a Friday statement. As of Friday afternoon, efforts were underway to rescue an additional 400 to 500 smaller fish that are inside other aquariums underneath the hotel lobby.
