Homemade or ghost guns, especially popular with gangs, are being seized by police at a faster rate than ever before.
Police in California are seizing more untraceable ghost guns and other firearms without serial numbers than ever before, according to a landmark state report on confiscated guns.
More than 60% of these confiscated unserialized guns were homemade or the manufacturer was unidentifiable. State statistics show that 73.6% of homicides in 2022, where the weapon was identified, involved a firearm. Among cities in Southern California, Compton had one of the highest rates of unserialized seized guns, at 9 per 1,000 people. The city of Los Angeles had a rate of 1.2.
Orange County sheriff’s Cmdr. Tony Benfield agreed that California’s strict laws probably would not cure the ghost gun problem. “You can’t extrapolate whether there is more or less danger ,” he said. “There’s millions of reasons why a gun ends up in police custody. … California has a lot of laws that make a lot of firearms illegal to possess, there are prohibited people who are not a danger, prohibited guns that are not a danger.”
As for cities, Compton had one of the highest rates of seized guns in Southern California at 60.3 per 1,000 residents, followed by San Bernardino at 41.5.
