The busy travel weekend caps a summer of red-hot inflation.
There’s no question gas prices have gone down recently — but there’s also no question that getting in one last summer trip will cost more this Labor Day after a summer of red-hot inflation.
On Friday, gas cost an average of $3.80 per gallon, according to AAA. That was down almost 40 cents from a month ago, the data showed. Nearly two-thirds of people said they were planning a Labor Day weekend trip and 80% of them said they would drive to get there, according to a Cars.com survey earlier this week. For those skipping the trip, around one-quarter said it was because of gas prices.
From Thursday through the weekend, an estimated 12.6 million people will fly from U.S. airports, according to Hopper.com, which aggregates airfare prices and other travel data. On Thursday, Sept. 1, there were 2.3 million people passing through TSA checkpoints. On Sept. 1, 2019, the number was 2.1 million.
