In 2021, more than 45,000 guns were traced or recovered due to crimes committed in Texas, according to the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.Now, Bexar County Commissioners Court is working to promotein the county through GunSafety4Bexar. Starting June 15, the program will include the distribution of 3,800 portable handgun safes and 1,000 handgun cable locks free of charge.
"Together with University Health, the Court is taking proactive steps to prevent accidental discharges and unauthorized access to firearms, particularly by minors," a news release from the Commissioners Court reads."And reduce risks associated with unsecured handguns in homes and vehicles." The goal of GunSafety4Bexar is to promote responsible gun ownership, increase awareness of gun safety and enhance community safety. The safes and locks are meant to add an extra layer of safety for gun owners and their families in Bexar County.
