George Lucas considered making Darth Maul and General Grievous the same character in the Star Wars prequels. 'I'm glad that Grievous is his own thing anyway, but I thought it was interesting that the concept guys almost talked George into that.'

Star Wars creator George Lucas once considered a major prequel trilogy villain twist involving Darth Maul and General Grievous. Lucas' prequel trilogy featured both Maul and Grievous as separate villains. In Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, Maul was introduced into Star Wars canon as the apprentice of the secret Sith lord, Chancellor Palpatine .

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In a recent interview with SlashFilm, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels animated series writer Henry Gilroy revealed that Lucas considered including a huge Star Wars prequel trilogy villain twist. Gilroy said that concept developers on the Star Wars prequel trilogy suggested that General Grievous should be Darth Maul's remains from his battle with the Jedi behind the plates of armor.

"George was considering that Grievous was Maul behind the armor plate. It made sense. He's cut in half, and he's in this robot body or whatever. I'm glad that Grievous is his own thing anyway, but I thought it was interesting that the concept guys almost talked George into that.

General Grievous' haunting yet undeniably cool backstory is very similar to that of Darth Maul. After presumably falling to his death after being cut in half by Obi-Wan, Maul's hatred kept him alive long enough to take on cybernetic legs. In the spirit of Grievous, Maul used his cybernetics to stay alive and eventually became a very dangerous warrior again in the aftermath.

Ironically, both Grievous and Maul were finally killed by Obi-Wan. Grievous' tenure atop the droid army ended via a blaster shot to the chest by the Jedi, while Maul's end on Tatooine was far more poetic and ceremonious. All things considered, it's easy to see the connections between Grievous and Maul, but the creators made the right decision in splitting their two stories up.
