What’s up with Trevor Lawrence? Is he still a generational quarterback? Did the experts overrate him? Can the Jaguars get off the hamster wheel of losing? The questions are understandable, Gene Frenette writes, but Jags fans shouldn't panic.

So after Lawrence’s seven turnovers played a big part in back-to-back games the Jaguars were in position to win and lost, his forgiveness quota among NFL observers diminished a bit.

To some extent, those are valid questions, but we need to pump the brakes a bit on any definitive Lawrence referendums. A 22-game resume, albeit with so-so numbers across the board, is a relatively small sample size when you consider it’s his first year in a new offense.Yes, his last two performances have been terribly disappointing and Lawrence must minimize those egregious, self-inflicted errors. But it’s still a bit early to go into panic mode over No.

Running back Travis Etienne, who played three seasons with Lawrence at Clemson, has zero reservations about his long-time teammate getting to a level necessary to be a quality NFL quarterback. He even invented a word to make his point. Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens duplicated Mahomes’ league MVP feat in his second season, and the Buffalo Bills’ Josh Allen — an MVP runner-up to Aaron Rodgers in 2020 — elevated into the top tier of NFL quarterbacks by his third season.

Like his players, he has the unwavering belief Lawrence’s game can keep rising to where he will eventually have the same impact as some of his 20-something peers now considered elite. But not every QB experiences a big jump on the same time frame. Pederson added the old standard when he played was usually giving quarterbacks three years to determine their future outlook, but that’s not always the case today.

The Jaguars have seen plenty of evidence from Lawrence to believe he’s capable of greatness, but he must deliver more than flashes or a game here and there. “Yeah, you can’t let that stuff bother you,” said Lawrence. “You can’t let it affect you, for sure. The worst thing you can do is hold onto that as far as just mentally and let that affect, whether that’s your confidence, or you’re hesitating a little bit because of what happened the week before.”

Still, despite all of this concern about Trevor, it cannot be emphasized enough that his second season isn’t winding down. He’s just five games into adjusting to a new system, new coaching staff and new weapons around him. That hasn’t been happening lately. Since leading the Jaguars to successful tying or go-ahead fourth-quarter field goals last year in wins over the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills, it’s been tough sledding for Lawrence.
