Only a handful of counties averaged over $4 a gallon entering this week.
Ramsey Archibald | [email protected] prices statewide fell steadily over the last month and a half, after reaching peaks of more than $4.60 per gallon in mid-June, according to[Can’t see the chart?The statewide average for a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline was $3.80 on Aug. 1. That’s an 18% decline since June 16, when the price for a gallon was $4.62.
Most counties have seen significant relief since mid-June, but some areas are still paying more than $4 per gallon, according to AAA. That includes several of Alabama’s poorest counties.Several counties in and around the Black Belt - one of the poorest regions not only in Alabama, but in the nation - lead the state in average gas prices.
As of Aug. 1, residents of Wilcox County were paying $4.06 for a gallon of gas. That was the most of any county in the state. According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, thewas just $31,909 per year - the lowest in Alabama and the 21st lowest among all counties in the United States. Nearby Perry, Conecuh, Clarke and Washington counties were the only other counties in the state paying more than $4 per gallon as of Aug. 1.
