Game of Thrones co-creator D.B. Weiss opens up about his and David Benioff's possible Star Wars return after exiting due to scheduling conflicts. The HBO fantasy drama based on George R.R. Martin's novels was Weiss' first major project after a number of scripts he wrote both solo and with Benioff died in development hell, including Wolfgang Petersen's unproduced Ender's Game adaptation, a film adaptation of Halo helmed by Neill Blomkamp and an I Am Legend prequel.
Benioff and Weiss were first announced to be joining the Star Wars universe in 2018 as the Game of Thrones creators were hired by Disney and Lucasfilm to write and produce a new trilogy of films scheduled for 2022, 2024 and 2026 releases. The duo would ultimately have to depart the planned projects as they inked a massive $200 million production deal with Netflix for several films and TV shows.
"Right at the moment, I'm so excited about Metal Lords coming out, and there's also The Three-Body Problem that we're working on and, between those two things, that accounts for about 150% of my attention span. I manage expectations on my mental capacity." As Weiss mentions, he and Benioff are currently busy working on an adaptation of Liu Cixin's The Three-Body Problem novel trilogy for Netflix in the form of a four-part series, writing and executive producing it with former The Terror showrunner Alexander Woo.
Despite the Game of Thrones creators downplaying their potential Star Wars return, the franchise's big screen future isn't all dour as multiple projects are currently in the works, including Patty Jenkins' Rogue Squadron movie slated for a December 2023 release.
