For many people with severe alopecia areata, who have lived with baldness, or with scalps only sparsely dotted with hair, or with missing eyebrows or lashes, the future has a new look.
Baricitinib was approved last month by the FDA, and patients will be able to get it soon with a prescription.patients. It was then tested in clinical trials with alopecia areata patients who had at least 50% hair loss.
What hasn’t worked in clinical trials is topical JAK inhibitors, King says, though some patients who are referred to him spend up to $400 month on those treatments. “This is an important thing for everybody to hear,” he said. “We don't want severe hair loss to go on for too long before we treat it. So that the hair follicles remain viable.”
Now, patients have heard the news about the approved oral treatment and have been calling and emailing dermatologists.
