The makers of the popular game Minecraft say they will no longer share official content on Reddit following the changes being pushed through by the site’s management.
, with thousands of volunteer moderators effectively taking down their communities in protest at massive hikes in Reddit’s API pricing, which are forcing developers of third-party Reddit apps to shut down.
Now it seems Mojang—the Microsoft-owned developer of Minecraft—is siding with the strikers. “As you have no doubt heard by now, Reddit management introduced changes recently that have led to rule and moderation changes across many subreddits,” reads a“Because of these changes, we no longer feel that Reddit is an appropriate place to post official content or refer our players to.”
Mojang previously used to post technical detail such as game changelogs to Reddit, which list new features or bug fixes made during game updates. Mojang is now encouraging players to instead visit the“You are of course welcome to post unofficial update threads going forward,” the Reddit post from Mojang added.
The Minecraft community on Reddit is one of the largest on the site. It has 7.4 million subscribers, which puts it in the top 100 communities. The site has almost 9,000 different communities.The Reddit protest is about to reach a key stage, with the new API prices due to kick in from the start of July. The makers of popular third-party Reddit apps, such as Apollo, have said they will close down on June 30, because they cannot afford to pay the new API fees.
Reddit’s outspoken CEO, Steve Huffman, has largely avoided public comment this week, after initially refusing to meet the strikers’ demands. In a leaked internal memo that was sent to staff when the strike first started a fortnight ago, Huffman declared that: “There’s a lot of noise with this one. Among the noisiest we’ve seen. Please know that our teams are on it, and like all blowups on Reddit, this one will pass as well.
