Bobby Joe Espinosa, 39, an ex-officer from the Precinct 4 Constable’s Office was indicted Monday and is facing two charges of bribery and one charge of theft by a public servant of more than $2,500 and less than $30,000.A former deputy constable is accused of shaking down Vietnamese businesses and officials are seeking more people who may have been targeted.
“He used a badge to coerce, intimidate and steal and we believe there are more victims who have yet to come forward,” said District Attorney Kim Ogg in a news release. “The community needs to know that everyone is accountable under the law whether they are wearing a uniform or not.”Espinosa is accused of going into Vietnamese businesses located between FM 1960 and Veterans Memorial Drive that were often owned and operated by immigrants, according to officials.
Espinosa reportedly took cash from cash registers, tip jars and even pried open game machines to get money, authorities said. The theft charge is a third-degree felony and carries a maxim of 10 years in prison, according to authorities.
