Barber was the Cowboys fourth-round pick in the 2005 NFL Draft out of Minnesota. He was a punishing runner, who gained more than 4,300 yards and scored 47 touchdowns for the team across six seasons. His best season came in 2007 when he ran for 975 yards and 10 touchdowns and was picked to play in the Pro Bowl.Barber would have turned 39 on June 10.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic death of Marion Barber III,” the Cowboys said in a statement posted to the team’s Twitter account when he died. “Marion was an old-school, hard-nosed football player who ran with the will to win every down. He had a passion for the game and love for his coaches and teammates. Our hearts go out to Marion’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
