Developers are caching their first look at the next MacBook, and there's something unusual going on.

This 8/10 mix echoes the current M2 chipset used in the existing MacBook Air models, suggesting that Apple could delay the launch of the M3 chipset to allow the MacBook Air 15-inch to still be 'current' or launch this new laptop with a chipset one generation back.
Given the ridiculous levels of hype building around the launch of Apple's mixed reality efforts at WWDC, there's an argument that you do not dilute any of the messaging around this new product line with another new product line. Which is exactly what a 15-inch MacBook Air would be. Until a few years ago, Apple would launch all of its new iPhone and iPhone Pro models with the latest A-class chipsets. Recently the lower tier iPhones are being shipped with the previous generation, a choice that has led to more specs separation and the price differential between the vanilla and Pro handsets. Apple has also kept the M1 MacBook Air in its inventory,999 entry-level price while offering the M2 MacBook Air at a higher price.
Tim Cook's Apple has shown over the last few years that it will happily mix and match hardware generations to create a stepped portfolio with options at each price point. A larger MacBook Air with an M2 chipset fits into this pattern nicely. The MacBook Air machines sitting a generation back on the MacBook Pro would fit into that pattern as well.
