With Ford heading back to F1, check out our September 1967 story about the engine that started Ford's run of dominance in the sport.

. Written by Griffith Borgeson.

Duckworth presented his sketches to Harley Copp, engineering director of Ford of Britain and a seasoned judge of racing matters. Copp was impressed by what he saw and by the possibilities it held for a most logical program combining Formulas 1 and 2. A series of meetings followed between Copp, other Ford of Britain technical brass, Duckworth, Costin, Chapman and his chief designer, Maurice Phillippe.

The Ford-Cosworth F2 engine is a fairly classical piece of design in its use of four valves and one spark plug per cylinder, cup-type cam followers, drysump lubrication, and spur-gear drive to practically everything. It is highly skillful attention to detail, particularly to breathing, which accounts for its remarkable output of better than 137 bhp per liter.

So, speaking in very rough terms, the V-8 was conceived of as a pair of F2 fours on a common crankcase. Most of the points of similarity lay in the top end, above all in the design of combustion chambers, valve gear, porting and all the details that influence volumetric efficiency. A very large amount of the F2 design and test data could be applied directly to the F1.

Jim Clark had been doing most of Lotus' Indy program, and when he arrived at Zandvoort on the evening of Thursday, June 1, he sat in the new Lotus-Ford for the first time. Hill's total time at the car's controls added up to a day and a half. But things went reasonably well on Friday. It was determined that the gear ratios were wrong, Hill lost a clutch, and the rest of the day was spent in experimenting with adjustments to the running gear in an effort to get the beast to handle.

Clark, meanwhile, was beginning to get acquainted with his car, found that it had much more power than he had expected and that he was able to get it very usefully to the ground. Five laps after his teammate's retirement, Jim knifed into the lead, and it remained his until the race ended 74 laps later. Perhaps never before in the history of racing has so new and untried a machine won aLegends Jim Clark, No. 5, and Jack Brabham go at it during the 1967 Grand Prix of the Netherlands.
