Architect Virginia Kelsey was looking for a new home with a small-town feel. She found it...

Virginia Kelsey was tied to her Tanglewood townhome when her parents were still living nearby, wanting to be close to assist in their care.

The 1,512-square-foot home had been well taken care of, but Kelsey is a residential architect and a minimalist who wanted less, not more. Colorful tile needed to come out, and some short, built-in bookcases that likely were intended to establish the line between the living room and kitchen would be removed, too.

When she was young, she used her toys to build cities and farms, asking her parents to buy small plastic figures at the toy store so she could populate the communities she built. Often, her brothers' train sets became part of the landscape. To make the main living area feel more open, she painted it all Benjamin Moore’s “Atrium White,” a soft white that looks good in the natural light that comes in through the home’s many windows.

The living room has a fireplace and plenty of room for a sofa, a black leather Eames lounge chair and an antique armchair that shifts into the dining room when it’s needed. “Calm” has become a big part of Kelsey’s life during the pandemic, when she took up yoga and found a great stress reliever.
