Migration is nothing new to Black folks–digital or otherwise.

within digital publics to unfairly punish Black women and other minoritized communities. Specifically, when Black women supported #SayHerName, their posts were flagged, taken down, and many were banned. And perhaps now we might add “musked” to the lexicon, since similar trends are seen on Twitter.

Whether it’s #MeToo, #BLM, #MMIW, #NotYourAsianSidekick, or #NotYourMami, the intersectional efforts of women of color to use these platforms to create community and propel and sustain movements have been impressive, yet also marked with targeted harassment, abuse, and ignoring their expertise on how to make the platform safer.

But there is a dilemma about leaving that faces many Black women in particular, who, being hypervisible on the platform, have an outsize influence on Twitter while at the same time receiving the most targeted hate—they have invested more than a decade worth of time, energy, and content into this site.

In truth, Twitter changed leadership from one mercurial billionaire to another, and in that regard it affirms that the site was never “ours,” and cements how dangerous it is to think of these systems as the “public square” no matter how many times people refer to it as such. However, there is no platform without the people.
