The bill now heads to Gov. Ron DeSantis’s desk.
Opponents of the bill have criticized the move, stating that it would subject transgender individuals to excessive harassment, and have questioned how the legislation would be enforced.
Florida is among several GOP-controlled states that have proposed legislation this year targeting transgender people. While the listed bill doesn’t specifically mention drag shows, it came after DeSantis’ administration took steps such as filing a complaint against the Hyatt Regency Miami hotel for hosting a “Drag Queen Christmas” event in December.
The bill, which will be heard by the Senate Rules Committee, directly defined what each gender meant, labeling a female as “a person belonging, at birth, to the biological sex which has the specific reproductive role of producing eggs.”Similarly, it defines a male as “a person belonging, at birth, to the biological sex which has the specific reproductive role of producing sperm.”
