In his nearly four years as governor, DeSantis has not taken a position on the Rodman dam, also called the Kirkpatrick Dam.
That endgame has not applied to the Rodman dam, another structure that environmental organizations have tried to dismantle for decades.
The state's long-standing permit application would create an opening in the 1.3 mile long earthen dam for the Okclawaha River to once again flow in its natural channel. The breach would drain the reservoir. A bridge over the new opening would enable continued use of a road that goes along the top of the earthen dam..
“I think the most challenging part is that this is a project of regional and statewide significance, but there’s also that very hyperlocal component,” Rinaman said., said public opinion in Putnam and Marion counties, which have parts of the reservoir in them, has been shifting in favor of removing the dam.
The state Department of Environmental Protection, which filed the initial application for partial removal of the dam on Nov. 25, 1997, received a time waiver from the St. Johns River Water Management District for the application. The waiver runs through Dec. 31, 2023.Decades of debate over Rodman dam
advocacy group. “I call it a joint venture between man and nature because really it is. It wouldn't be there if man hadn't scarred Earth, but by the same token, what's come from it is pretty incredible.” "If I grew up fishing on the Rodman with my granddad, I would want to fight for it, too, and if it was a naturally-functioning lake that didn’t harm this river as well as the springs and the St. Johns, we wouldn’t be having this conversation," she said."But the dam is like a tourniquet on the leg, and the longer the tourniquet is on, it’s going to kill the downstream part of your leg.
The state Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission trophycatch tracker shows fisherman at Rodman have caught and released 953 bass in the “lunker club” of 8 to 9.99 pounds, 194 bass in the “trophy club” of 10 to 12.99 pounds, and five in the “hall of fame club” of 13 pounds and bigger. “To me, it’s an unreliable recreational source,” Rinaman said. “It’s never functioned like a natural lake.”
Rinaman said what's needed is a three-pronged strategy that restores the Ocklawaha River, creates more recreational assets for access to the river, and offers business incentives. She estimated the cost of accomplishing that would be around $75 million over five years. “The people that are using Rodman are buying fishing licenses, which goes directly back into conservation efforts,” Miller said. “They're buying gas and paying taxes. They're buying parts for their boat. They’re buying fishing equipment, bait, tackle.
Climate change will cause more saltwater to enter the river from the Atlantic Ocean as sea levels rise. "The public, the science and the economics all overwhelmingly support restoration," Crist said."And if he doesn't get it done, as your governor, I will." Payne, who is running unopposed in November for a House district that contains Rodman Reservoir, said he does not believe the Barcelo survey captures the sentiment among his constituents.

Treasury probing Florida Gov. DeSantis' migrant flightsThe Treasury Department's internal watchdog is investigating whether Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis improperly used federal pandemic aid to fly migrants to Martha’s Vineyard as part of his effort to “transport illegal immigrants to sanctuary destinations.” At issue is whether millions of dollars in interest earned on State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds, disbursed through the American Rescue Plan, was used to facilitate the transport of about 50 Venezuelans from Texas to Massachusetts in mid-September, with a stopover in Florida on the way. Documents indicate Florida officials paid Destin, Fla.-based Vertol Systems Co. $1.56 million for the Martha's Vineyard flight and possibly for a flight to Delaware, the home state of President Joe Biden, that ultimately didn’t happen.
